Savita Bhabhi in trouble again?

Savita Bhabhi, India’s first porn toon star, is courting trouble yet again. Bollywood in Love - les Aventures de Savita Bhabhi, a new comic book, based on her sexcapades, by French publisher Editions Blanche, may have got her fans excited, but not everyone is amused.

Rajesh Chharia, president of Internet Service Provider Association of India, one of the people who pushed for the ban on the original Savita Bhabhi website, says, “This needs to be stopped, in whatever form it is, since the original website is banned in India.”

But her followers stay loyal. After being banned by the government last June for obscenity, last month Savita Bhabhi returned on new URL, www.kirtu.com. And now, with the comic book, SB has found fans in France too. Writes Adam Viviane, “Too good. This comic awakens the senses!!! She’s so hot man!” Vin4u blogs, “This is cooler than a site. We can pass it around... I’m so ordering it.”

The 96-page comic book is authored by Deshmukh, the UK-based brain behind the SB website, and designed by graphic designers Dexstar and Madman. Currently it is available at online retailer www.amazon.com’s France website for €13.25 (Rs 875). The book is yet to come to India. Advertisement

China grabs more Indian land: Official report

India has lost 'substantial' amount of land along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the last two decades to Beijing, according to an official report.

At a recent meeting held at Leh, Jammu Kashmir government, Union Ministry of Home Affairs and the Army have agreed that there was difference in the maps of various agencies.

The meeting was chaired by Commissioner (Leh) A K Sahu and attended, among others, by the 14 Corps Brigadier General Staff Brig Sarat Chand and Colonel Inderjit Singh.

Officials at the meeting said, "It is clear and accepted that we are withdrawing from LAC and our area has shrunk over a period of time. This process is very slow but we have lost substantial amount of land in 20-25 years."

The meeting also pointed out that "There is a lack of institutional memory in various agencies as well as clear policy on this issue which in the long run has resulted in loss of Indian territory in favour of China."

The report was filed by former sub divisional magistrate (Nyoma) Tsering Norboo.

Norboo said, "They (Chinese) have threatened the nomadic people, who had been using the Dokbug area (in Ladakh sector) area for grazing for decades, in a way to snatch our land in inches."

The SDM also contended that it was another attempt by the Chinese to term, and claim, the territory disputed in the same fashion as they had taken Nag Tsang area in 1984, Nakung in 1991 and Lungma-Serding in 1992. Advertisement

Sachin highest tax paying sportsperson in country

Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has become the highest taxpayer among sportspersons in the country for the last quarter of 2009 while film stars Akshay Kumar and Aamir Khan edged past others in Bollywood on individual tax payers category.

Sachin paid Rs 1.5 crore for the quarter till December and stood at 115th position ahead of Indian cricket team captain M S Dhoni among the 500 top taxpayers of the country.

Dhoni and Sehwag had paid Rs 1 crore each for the same period and stood at 199 and 201 positions respectively in the latest list of top 500 taxpayers with the Finance Ministry.

Akshay Kumar and Aamir Khan have occupied 25th and 26th positions respectively edging past all others in Bollywood, including Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan by dishing out Rs 4.5 crore each for the December period in the current financial year.

However, the Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan is missing from the top 500 list though his son and daughter-in-law have figured in it.

Businessman Mahesh Gordhandas Garodia is the top taxpayer in the country dishing out Rs 20 crore.

Lawyer-politician Abhisek Singhvi figures in the list by paying Rs 1.5 crore for this period.

Other cricketers who have figured in the list are Saurav Ganguly (Rs 90 lakh) and Harbhjan Singh (Rs 70 lakh).

IPL mastermind Lalit Modi has occupied the 47th position with a deposit of Rs 3 crore. Advertisement

Insecurities have made me hungry;;Gautam Gambhir

He’s only a small man but if you saw him bat for over 10 hours in Napier to save a Test, you’ll know he has a big heart.

Gautam Gambhir’s journey in cricket has been all about absorbing pressure. So we’re putting him under some more. The Gambhir HT met was many men in one. At one level intense like Dravid, at another driven like Ganguly, and separately, married to the game, like Tendulkar. We think he’s India’s next captain. Over to Gambhir.

What does leadership mean to you?
Responsibility. Honour. A leader must motivate, must give players the freedom to play at their best. He has to be a man manager who knows his team inside out. You have to identify players who can win you games, empower them and back them.

You take a lot of pride in what you do …
Pride comes from the passion with which I have played cricket, right from under-14s to the Indian team. The toughest thing in my life has been earning the India cap. That’s why there’s never any shortage of passion when I pull on an India or Delhi cap.

When you’re batting there’s an unmistakable hunger. Where does that come from?
I’ve been hungry because insecurities still far outweigh the securities in my mind. At every level it’s been now or never, like I had to perform in the next game or be dropped. That insecurity has gone so deep into my system that I can’t get rid of it. Despite being ranked No. 1 (in Tests), I still feel that one bad performance and I’ll be out of the team. This also keeps me down to earth because though I’m seeing the good parts of life now, I’ve seen the dark side. There could be a time in the future that I might face this again.

You talk about the importance of being yourself. Sometimes you’re a kid among legends, at others you seem an angry young man. What is the real Gambhir?
That’s a good question. Sometimes I’m relaxed, light-hearted, talkative, cracking jokes and trying to be funny. Sometimes I’m intense. If I don’t make runs I get into my shell, put pressure on myself and try and get very intense. I’ve realised that when I play Test cricket, I relax more and enjoy the game. I want to keep things light, but it’s not easy for me. It still feels like the next innings I play could be the last for my country.

You work very well in partnerships. What makes this possible?
I’ve always loved taking responsibility. When I’m given responsibility, I try and take my game to another level. When I’m under pressure, I find a new level to my game and start concentrating more. When the team is under pressure or needs someone to stand up, I try and shut everything out and just bat, bat and bat. If there’s one thing that gives me maximum happiness as a human being, it’s scoring runs. This has been my life since I started playing cricket. The way I’ve been brought up is that you have to score runs to be in the side. This is so ingrained in me that the only thing that gives me happiness is to bat long and score runs. I’ve been lucky to be part of some great partnerships and that’s probably because I just love being at the crease.

If captaincy of the Indian team comes to you, how would you approach it?
If you ask any kid who plays cricket, the ultimate dream is to lead India. It’s the greatest honour possible to be leader of a team of a country of one billion people where cricket is a religion. If ever it comes to me I will try and take my game to another level.

Leadership isn’t just about runs or wickets. We rarely hear any wild stories about you. Have you consciously tried to maintain a certain image?
That’s just the kind of person I am. I’m quite reserved and not the party type. I don’t drink, never have. I like to spend my time with people who really matter to me. I’ve never made a conscious effort to keep my image a certain way. Cricket has always been the priority. After cricket, I don’t know what I’ll be like, but while I’m playing for my country this is how I’ll be. People look up to you and expect you to be a role model. If you are a cricketer in India, you are sometimes treated like a god.
That automatically means you have to maintain a certain decorum. Advertisement

Tiwari’s OSD involved in sex scandal: Report

In a major twist to the sex scandal involving former Andhra Pradesh Governor ND Tiwari, his Officer on Special Duty (OSD) Aryendra Sharma is now under scanner for his role in getting the women featuring in the sex tape inside the Raj Bhawan, claimed reports on Wednesday.

According to reports published in a leading daily, The Indian Express, Chief Security Officer of the Andhra Pradesh Raj Bhavan, Mohammed Shokat Ali has revealed that Sharma “exclusively handled” the visits of the women featuring in the tape.

Ali has also disclosed that being a close confidant of Tiwari, the OSD facilitated a smooth entry for those women and kept no records of their visits.

Ali further alleged that Sharma often violated the security protocol and norms to ensure that no official record of their presence was kept.

As per the security norms, the record of each visitor, his name and address, entry and exit time is registered, but in the case of these women, the record was kept only on paper.

Overriding security protocol and defying the security checks, Sharma used to instruct the security staff posted at the checkpost that such and such car belonging to the Raj Bhavan’s Motor Transport Department carrying ‘important guests’ of the Governor should be allowed a hassle-free entry with no frisking or identification checks.

Ali further revealed that the OSD, having certain powers and privileges from the Governor, facilitated the entry of these women inside the Raj bhawan in the name of “family members” or “important guests”.

These women mostly visited Raj Bhawan late in the night and no body intercepted them since OSD himself entertained them and arranged for their entry.

The security procedure at the Governor’s House require clearance from the Intelligence Bureau only then one can get an appointment with the Governor. The OSD makes arrangements usually for guests visiting Raj Bhavan, however in this case the security norms were often over-ruled.

The startling disclosures made by the Chief Security Officer is likely to cause much embarrassment to the Congress party and Tiwari himself, who resigned from his post citing health ground shortly after the news of the sex scandal broke.

Tiwari had earlier rubbished reports against him as "fabricated and false" and said he will continue to be in public life. He also sought to link it with the ongoing agitation over Telangana statehood. Advertisement

India's transsexuals try Internet dating

It's worked for thousands of singletons the world over and now India's transsexuals are hoping Internet dating can help their marginalised community find love.

A new site offers to help people born as men but living as women find husbands in a country where marriage remains the bedrock of society and gender and sexuality are still conservatively defined.

"Many men are attracted to transgender women, but when it comes to commitment they don't want to do it," the founder of the website, Kalki, who uses one name, explained to AFP.

"The types of grooms that our girls are looking for are men who would respect them as an equal human being, who would treat them with dignity and would introduce them to friends and family as a girlfriend or wife."

Transgenders and eunuchs -- men who have been castrated -- live on the extreme fringes of Indian society, often resorting to prostitution, begging or menial jobs that leave them mired in poverty.

Their numbers are difficult to estimate. Kalki says there are about 20,000 in her adopted state of Tamil Nadu, the most socially progressive area in the country with a total population of about 60 million.

"Because of the discrimination in India, 95 percent of transgenders live below the poverty line," says Kalki, who decided to start www.thirunangai.net after two of her transssexual friends were rejected by regular dating sites.

Poorly educated, often abused and tarred by the social stigma of their blurred gender, it is unsurprising that many in the community struggle to find the love and steady relationship they crave.

"We feel love and passion like anyone else and we want to have a family and a husband, even though we can't bear children. We'd like to adopt children," says Kalki.

The site, available in English and Tamil, features six women, most of whom have had full sex change operations and are looking for "ordinary" men for a long-term relationship and even marriage.

One of them is Sowmiya, a 23-year-old former sex worker who ran away from home aged 15 and is now a campaigner at Kalki's Sahodari Foundation, a non-government organisation that fights for the rights of transgenders.

"I put my profile on the site because I want to get married to a nice man and I want a baby," she told AFP from her home in Chennai. "I don't mind if he is not too educated, but he must be faithful to me and have a kind character."

She said she had received responses already "but I haven't accepted as the respondents were older, far older, than what I am looking for."

Another lonely heart, Deepika, writes on her profile that she is looking for a man with a decent job, a modern outlook and a good dress sense.

"Preferred age group 25-30, with a moustache," says the profile.

Kalki says she had about 200 responses from men in India, Europe, the United States and Middle East, including doctors, engineers, journalists, scientists, teachers and businessmen.

She has high hopes of selecting someone suitable for the women after a "very serious" screening process.

"Out of the six girls, if one person gets married I'll be totally happy," she adds. "The first wedding may be on Valentines Day or on Women's Day on March 8 next year."

The role of transsexuals and eunuchs, like many things in India, can appear contradictory to the outsider, as they are at once spurned and discriminated against, yet in some ways accepted as part of life.

They are common in Bollywood films where they frequently play comic roles and they often appear at weddings or at the homes of newly-born children where they are paid as a defence against bad luck.

Often they extract money at such occasions by threatening to strip or resort to violence unless they are given a financial inducement to leave.

The idea of transsexuals or "otherness" has a long history in India and eunuchs are mentioned in the earliest Hindu texts, the Vedas, believed to have been written in the second millennium BC.

Being a transsexual or castrated is seen as curse in traditional Hindu culture, but the idea has historically been more widely tolerated and even venerated in India's minority Muslim population.

Many eunuchs rose to powerful positions in the Islamic Mughal regime that ruled the subcontinent for hundreds of years after an invasion in 1526.

Kalki says the outlook is changing for them in contemporary India.

"Slowly we are getting recognised and feel good. We are beginning to feel we are part of society," she said.

In November, the community claimed victory in a long-standing campaign to be listed as "others," distinct from males and females, on electoral rolls and voter identity cards.

In the past, many eunuchs and transsexuals had abstained in elections because they were unwilling to identify their gender on voter forms.

They could write "E" for eunuch on passports and on certain government forms, but had failed in their campaign for acceptance at the ballot box.

Earlier in December, a eunuch called Kamla Jaan was elected mayor in a district in the central state of Madya Pradesh, where another eunuch has electoral success in 2000. Advertisement

Alleged sex clips of Andhra Governor Tiwari on TV

Andhra Pradesh Governor N D Tiwari landed in a fresh controversy on Friday after a local TV channel telecast explicit clippings purportedly of the veteran Congress leader with some women, a footage rejected by Raj Bhavan as fabricated and a "tissue of lies."

The development amid the crisis in the state over the Telangana statehood issue triggered demands that the 86-year-old Governor resign or be dismissed and also protests by women activists outside the Raj Bhavan where security was beefed up after the private Telugu channel aired the footage.

In a quick damage control, the Raj Bhavan approached the AP High Court, filed a PIL against the channel--"ABN Andhra Jyothy"--and got an order to restrain it from further airing the footage which was allegedly taken inside Raj Bhavan during the night.

The Channel stopped telecasting the footage after the court ordered the channel to stop airing it. The footage was shown for an hour from 10 AM today. Advertisement

Gavaskar frisked at Eden Gardens

Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar was on Thursday frisked by security men along with Sri Lanka's Russel Arnold while entering the Eden Gardens Stadium for the fourth one-dayer here on Thursday.

The duo are contracted with Nimbus as commentators for the series between India and Sri Lanka. According to eyewitnesses, the security personnel near the gate asked Gavaskar to show his identity card while another securitymen checked his carry bag.

"He was allowed in after the check-up. But Arnold was not let in for some reasons as somebody from the commentarty crew came and sorted out the matter.

The Sri Lankan was later allowed inside the ground," said an eyewitness. Union Railway minister Mamata Banerjee condemned the incident saying, "It is sad that the security procedure was followed even for a legendary cricketer like Gavaskar."

When contacted, Nimbus did not comment over the incident. Advertisement

India warns China: Do not use 'Made in India' tag for your drugs

India has lodged a strong protest with China over sale of anti-malarial generic drugs with a 'Made in India' label but produced in that country.

The Government's attention was drawn to the matter through a press release issued by the Nigerian Government Drug Regulatory Authority (NAFDAC) about detention and seizure of a large consignment of fake anti-malarial generic pharmaceuticals labelled "Made in India" but produced in China.

Taking serious note of the issue, a strong protest was lodged with concerned Chinese authorities with a request to take stringent action against such unscrupulous elements, the Rajya Sabha was informed today.

Consequent to India's protest, the Chinese government conducted an investigation and found a nexus between Chinese drug manufacturers and importers in Nigeria, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Dinesh Trivedi said in reply to a written question. Advertisement

China-Pak rail project alarms India

Less than two kilometres away from the last village on India’s western border, Pakistan is building what is ostensibly a railway station with China’s help.

Located on an established trade route between India and Pakistan, it appears to be an innocuous structure. But given the region’s geo-political equations, experts are viewing it as an aggressive attempt by our northern neighbour to establish a foothold close to India’s western border — its first.

“It’s part of the larger Chinese plan for strategic domination,” said Dr Srikanth Kondapalli, a professor in Chinese studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University.

Border officials fear the building will double up as a surveillance facility for both the Chinese and the Pakistanis. If war ever breaks out, it will also help Pakistan move troops to the border more swiftly.

“First, the nexus between China and Pakistan consisted of military spare-parts supplies, then came partnerships for military supplies,” said Brig (retd) Gurmeet Kanwal, director of Centre for Land Warfare Studies in New Delhi. “Then, we learnt China clandestinely supplied 50 kg uranium to Pakistan. Now there is an infrastructure nexus.”

With China’s help, about two months ago, Pakistan began building this structure about 1.5 km away from the Indian border, said BSF officers manning the border in Rajasthan.

Among the sources of information are passengers on the Thar Express, a weekly train that makes the six-km journey from Munabao in Rajasthan, 250-kilometres west of Jodhpur, to Khokrapur in Pakistan.

“There is some construction activity along the railway line,” said Kalpesh Kumar, from Mirpur Khaas in Pakistan who came off the train last Saturday.

This is not China’s first attempt to establish a presence on India’s western front, said border officials. In June, it tried to convert a ramshackle structure into a proper building in Pakistani territory located in no-man’s land, i.e. within 150 metres of India’s border. Work stopped only after India opposed —the structure violated an agreement that forbids either India or Pakistan from building anything 150 metres within the international border. Advertisement

What Obama’s dinner served India

Crystal, chandeliers, stars & stripes- it was a romantic setting, which could have been utilized by two willing partners to the best of their interests. In fact, the right moves were made by both sides like clinking champagne glasses while listening to love songs. But the date ended in a damp squib of sorts as no vows were taken.

We are of course not talking about a PG Woodhouse story or a Yash Chopra movie; but the Tuesday rendezvous of PM Manmohan Singh and President Barack Obama had all the makings of a bestseller and a blockbuster. But it sunk like Blue, with no big agenda in sight.

The dinner was an affair to remember no doubt. The Obamas kept their best foot forward in making the Singhs feel at home- the best one in America. Obama said ‘Namaste, Aapka Swagat Hai’ to Singh saab and Michelle gave the final word on high fashion as she wore churis and dupatta on her gown. The first state dinner of America’s first black President broke the George W Bush tradition in being a gala event for over 300 people in the lawns- Bush liked it small and exclusive; he held only 6 state dinners and one was for Dr Manmohan Singh.

And needless to say, more fruitful too. He convinced the world that it was time for India to come out of the shadows and deserved having the high end nuclear technology, which was denied to it so far. And he was funny, so that gave us a lot to write home about. But that’s a ‘misunderestimated’ aspect of his relationship vis-à-vis India.

So snatching attention from AR Rahman crooning Jai Ho at the green dinner- no link to Pakistan here; just the table drapery and cuisine theme- and focusing it on the business of the high profile visit, one may come to some clear conclusions about the new leadership in the US and its perception of India.

Pakistan & Afghanistan

It was probably for the first time ever that India made it clear it didn’t want the international forces to exit from Afghanistan just yet- and leave the field open for Pakistan to rebuild Taliban there. Singh said in no uncertain terms that he couldn’t believe the Pakistani Army going after its local Taliban and expected Obama to acknowledge, if not endorse, his views.

Tut, tut.

Obama expressed satisfaction at operations in South Wairistan and just said, “Obviously Pakistan has an enormously important role in the security in the region by making sure that the extremist organisations that often operate out of its territories are dealt with effectively." He did not even mention about the billions of dollars being pumped into that country that is most often- as a recent CIA report also said- used against India, though some strict provisions were introduced in the Kerry-Lugar Bill. How far would that be monitored remains to be seen.

The saving grace was Obama’s appreciation of India’s rebuilding efforts which flies in the face of Pakistani charge of India throwing the region off-balance by its presence their.
One of the primary aims of this visit was to test the waters about American policy on Asia and especially China and not just in view of the recent aggression of the communist nation which the PM ‘noted’. The concern was aggravated when Obama-Hu expressed their desire of working for peace in South Asia.

While there has been no retraction on that stance despite the loud noises India made, Obama clearly recognized India as a power, which was essential for peace and stability in Asia.

"Beyond Asia, as the world's largest multi-ethnic democracy, as one of the world's fastest-growing economies, and as a member of the G20, India will play a pivotal role in meeting the major challenges we face today,” he said, adding that India and US shared ‘values’ and were ‘natural and growing partners’. This language was absent during Obama’s China visit where he talked about respecting territorial integrity.

Terror and Security

Obama made it a point to remember the ghastly Mumbai terror attacks two days ahead of its first anniversary. He urged that perpetrators of 26/11 be brought to justice, but failed to name Hafiz Sayeed, who India believes is the mastermind. He vaguely said about cooperation on counter-terror front with India and both countries uniting against ‘external threats.’

He also said," To prevent future attacks, we agreed that our law enforcement and intelligence agencies will work even closer, including sharing more information," he said.

Obama’s mention of ‘terror’ and ‘neighbourhood’ in the same phrase was good to hear ofcourse, but the words have not begun matching actions and policies yet.

Nuclear deal and non-proliferation

The celebrated India-US civil nuclear deal has emerged as perhaps the biggest sticking point between Obama and Manmohan. A left-over of the Bush era, the deal was to be signed with finality during Manmohan’s visit, but something changed when he landed there as India’s Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao announced they did not expect the PM to lock the deal.

Singh said only "Is remained to be dotted and Ts crossed" to complete the landmark deal.

The issue of reprocessing spent fuel and American nuclear companies having minimum liability in case of any nuclear eventuality in India in their plants has become a stumbling block. Even as both Obama and Manmohan maintained a reassured posture towards completion of the deal that changed relations between the biggest and greatest democracies, India accepting invitation to the Nuclear Conference next year has raised some eyebrows.

While Obama accepted India was a nuclear power, he tactfully added in the joint statement that both countries would work towards a nuclear free world. This falls in line with his proposed amendment to the deal when he was Senator in 2006 that almost wrecked it.

Economic cooperation

Economy is probably the best anchor for stable and prosperous ties between the US and India in times of recession. Not only is the US our largest trade partner, Indian companies invested an estimated USD 10 bn in that country which have created 65,000 jobs.

Some concrete steps have been taken to engage in better economic and trade ties. A new US-India Economic and Financial Partnership to strengthen bilateral engagement on macroeconomic, financial sector, development, and infrastructure related issues will be established by the Finance ministers of the respective countries in 2010.

On long-standing American concerns over India’s reforms, Singh, the architect of these reforms, said the positive changes would continue to occur in the Indian system. That India wants ‘a web of economic relationships to intensify both business-to-business and people-to-people contacts’ was made known by Singh to everyone who mattered.

It resulted in signing of MOUs between the patent offices of the two countries to share their knowledge and avoid any confusions like in the case of ‘neem’. A Memorandum of Intent has also been signed to promote two way investment. However, the two sides still do not see eye-to-eye on the issue of free trade which has stalled the Doha round for years now and it was not even taken up in this visit. An FTA with the US also seems a distant possibility right now.

Climate Change

Probably the most crucial issue in the world at this time, climate change figured high on the table between the two leaders as was evident in the launching of a ‘Green Partnership’ programme. It envisages enhancing cooperation on energy security, energy efficiency, clean energy, and climate change.
The US is the second biggest polluter while India is the fourth one and both have locked horns in the run up to the Copenhagen Summit on global warming in early December. Obama-Manmohan did not defuse any tensions on the issue though gave a workable idea of bilateral agreements going a longer way. But does Earth have time for every country to enter a pact with the other for saving it?

There were 6 MOUs that both countries signed in various fields.

Education

This was perhaps the most surprising and pleasant development during Manmohan Singh’s meeting with Obama. A highly educated man himself, Singh pushed for a new initiative in the area and launched a USD 10 mn 'Obama-Singh 21st Century Knowledge Initiative’.

This will encourage increased interaction and links between Indian and American universities. The bi-national Fulbright-Nehru Scholarship Program has been given a boost through a 45 per cent increase in funding by each government.

In the end, while one can’t say if India will stand to gain anything from the man who gave a new hope to the world and won the Nobel without even ending the war in Afghanistan, it is true that our PM is returning a happy man. And that is not just because Obama invoked Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr and Nehru in his welcoming remarks, but because he has probably realized that while the new President is no Bush, he is at least quite accommodating as well as forthcoming on issues common to India and the US.

After all, for the first time in its history, a US state dinner had a vegetarian menu, in the honour of the man from India. Advertisement

Today, I’m more proud of Sachin: Kapil Dev

I’ve always been proud of Sachin (Tendulkar), but I’ve become more proud of him after his ‘I’m an Indian first’ comment the other day... Why should that upset anybody?” asked the iconic Kapil Dev.

Speaking to The Telegraph on Tuesday afternoon, the 1983 World Cup-winning captain added with a touch of emotion: “Like you, I’m disappointed that nobody has actually defended Sachin after he’s been attacked (by the Shiv Sena)... He’s done so much for the country and, surely, Maharashtra is an integral part of it...

“I’m particularly disappointed that the biggest players from Maharashtra and Mumbai, like Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar and Ravi Shastri, haven’t reacted... They must make their stand clear... Do they support Sachin or not? I’d like somebody as eminent as Lata Mangeshkarji, too, to make public her position on the entire controversy...

“It would be a sad day if, for example, a sportsman from Bengal said he was a Bengali first and, then, an Indian... All of us are first Indians, then members of any community or belonging to a specific state...”

Kapil, who was contacted in New Delhi, felt that it “wasn’t necessary” for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to take a stand.

“I wouldn’t say that the BCCI, as an institution, has to react... But, yes, some officials could do so as individuals... More than them, though, the Gavaskars have to take a position... They should come out with the truth... Nobody has the right to stop somebody from stating what they believe in,” Kapil maintained. Advertisement

26/11 mugs on sale: Sena targets Leopold

A year after it was attacked by two armed terrorists who randomly sprayed bullets on its unsuspecting customers, Café Leopold was under attack again on Tuesday.

This time it was from the members of the Shiv Sena.

A group of Sena workers staged a violent agitation outside the popular south Mumbai hangout, protesting against mugs that the café has created to commemorate the first anniversary of the 26/11 terror attacks.

These mugs, which had bullet marks painted on them with words of praise for the National Security Guards, were being sold by the cafe for Rs 300 each.

The Sainiks were upset with the cafe for ‘commercialising’ the incident by selling these beer-filled mugs to their customers.

Around 4.30 pm, a group of about 20 Shiv Sena workers led by local leader Pandurang Sakpal barged into the café and slapped an employee.

“They are playing with the sentiments of the martyrs who gave up their life fighting terrorists,” Sakpal said.

Farhang Jehani, the owner of Café Leopold, was not available for comment despite several efforts to get in touch with him. Neither did Jehani reply to text messages or telephone calls.

The police rushed to the spot and managed to bring the situation under control.

Officials of the Colaba police station have arrested nine workers of the Shiv Sena who were later released after being fined for the offence.

The Sena workers claimed that the café had later withdrawn the sale of the mugs.

This, however, could not be confirmed with the management of Café Leopold.

Located across the road from Colaba police station, Café Leopold was one of the first spots to be attacked on November 26 by two gunmen killing 11 people, including two foreigners. Advertisement

President Pratibha Patil in a new avatar !

President Pratibha Patil will exchange her traditional sari for a G-suit on her maiden Sukhoi flight tomorrow

President Pratibha Patil will be seen in a new avatar on her trip to Pune tomorrow. Instead of being draped in her traditional sari, Patil will don flying overalls and a G-suit.

The complete attire for her sortie in an IAF Sukhoi includes a fire resistant flying overall, G-suit, aircrew helmet, gloves and boots.

The G suit is mandatory when a person flies on a supersonic aircraft. The trouser-like one piece apparel costs around Rs 30,000. Patil will be sitting in the rear end of the cockpit in the twin engine multi-role military aircraft.

According to a senior IAF source, the president has to wear this apparel as it is necessary not only for flight safety, but also for protection against unforeseen fire hazard.
Since the President was keen to fly in a Sukhoi, she was told that it is imperative for her to wear the flying overall like other pilots, as saris or other dresses don't meet the requirement," the source said.

The G-suit is a flight garment worn by astronauts and jet pilots that presses on the lower body to maintain the blood supply to the brain during rapid vertical acceleration.

Size matters

Incidentally, the IAF had to hunt for the flying overall and G suit, which would suit her small frame as these are usually worn by Air Force pilots who are usually tall and lanky and it is custom made to suit their frame, the source said.

A team of senior IAF personnel, including lady officers, have met the president at the Rashtrapathi Bhavan and briefed her in detail about the flight procedure the apparel that a person travelling on a supersonic aircraft has to wear, the process of wearing a G-suit and how to board the aircraft by showing her video clips.

"Boarding the rear end of the aircraft is trickier than the cockpit and, hence, the president has been specifically briefed about the technique of boarding," added the source.
The G Factor

What is G force?
The force of gravity when you are still is considered 1 G. Normally, we rarely experience anything other than 1 G.

However, sometimes in everyday life we can experience G-forces stronger than 1 G. For example, a cough produces a G-force of 3.5 G.

Humans can tolerate localised G forces in the range of 10 G for an instant. However, sustained G forces above 10 G can lead to permanent injury or even death.

What is a G suit?
G-suits helps jet pilots withstand high gravitational pressure during flights as it prevents excessive blood from flowing to the brain.

Dhoni says Sehwag is licensed to thrill

With Gautam Gambhir evolving into a complete batsman, there is just no need to straitjacket Virender Sehwag's characteristic daredevilry, India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni said in Kanpur on Monday.

Sehwag has been in his devil-may-care self in the Test series against Sri Lanka, getting off to rollicking starts but not staying long enough to convert them into big knocks.

But asked Dhoni if the Delhi dasher needs to tone down his cavalier attitude in the second Test starting tomorrow, he replied in the negative.

"You don't really want to tell a player like him what to do. That is how he plays the game and is known for. He is more of an aggressor and is not the kind of guy who would stick to the wicket for one-and-half days. He is always looking to get on with game," Dhoni explained.

Conveying the think-tank's unconditional support for Sehwag's brand of batsmanship, Dhoni said, "We want him to play his natural game. He is a very experienced player and we don't need him to tell anything."

India probably can afford to let Sehwag play his natural game since the other opener, Gambhir, has evolved into a complete batsman, who can shelve his natural aggression and graft for hours, something he displayed in the drawn first Test in Ahmedabad.

Effusive in his praise for the left-hander, Dhoni said, "He is a great character. Thrust him into whatever condition and he would play accordingly. He can shift gears easily and uses his feet well against the spinners.

"He has been consistently in good form over the past one-and-half years and whenever the team needed, he delivered. Once he sets himself well, he goes for big innings," added the captain.

Dhoni was his usual coy self when asked about team combination.

"It has always been an issue in the media but you have to wait till tomorrow," he said.

Asked how he rated S Sreesanth in the nets, Dhoni said the Kerala speedster was impressive but also sprang in defence of Ishant Sharma that revealed little about his preference if it comes to chose one between them.

"Sreesanth has bowled well in the nets. He bowled with great pace and swung it a lot but we will have to wait till tomorrow," Dhoni said.

"Ishant, meanwhile, is back in rhythm, as we saw in Ahmedabad. He is putting in a lot of efforts and the improvement is there to see," he said.

After the runfeast in Ahmedabad, Dhoni reckoned the pitch at the Green Park Stadium here would have more for the bowlers.

"Compared to Motera, the pitch here looks different. It has got some grass and the base is dry. But you cannot really predict how the wicket would play the next five days.

"Here the weather is cooler and as we know, initially there would be some help for the seamers. The outfield is nor lush, so there would be some reverse swing for the fast bowlers. It will break as well. Overall, I feel it would be a better wicket for the bowlers," he explained.

India's famed line-up looked vulnerable in the morning sessions in Ahmedabad and Dhoni said a little bit of caution would negate the issue.

"I think it depends on individual approach. With some assistance for the pacers, you at times get out to good deliveries. You have to keep that good delivery out and bat," he said.

One thing that has left Dhoni dithering is whether to bat first or not of he wins the toss.

"First sessions will be important. Everyday there would be a bit of help for the pacers. Even in ODIs, we see the first 30-45 minutes are important. Now here you have to decide whether to bat first and go hard at the first one hour. Once you see through the hour, it becomes easy to keep batting. Or you bat in the fourth innings and at the receiving end of a pitch where the ball would be turning," he said.

Dhoni assured there was no worry about Harbhajan Singh, who skipped today's practice, and said Dinesh Karthik -- drafted in as his cover -- would return to play Ranji Trophy.

"Harbhajan is fine. It being an optional practice, we leave it to the players to decide how they want to prepare. Yes, Dinesh was called in because I was having some problems. But now he, along with a few others, would go back to play Ranji," the India skipper said. Advertisement

Yuvraj the most tech-savvy and well-networked in the national cricket team,

Emboldened cricket fan Swati Jha asks the colourful Yuvraj Singh what he likes doing best apart from cricket and gets a mere smiley.

But at least it's a reply, something Indian fans would trade an arm or a leg for, because she's one of the 5,550 tweeters who follow Yuvraj Singh's posts on social networking site Twitter. And Yuvraj, perhaps the most tech-savvy and well-networked in the national cricket team, has not only been remarkably active on Twitter, but has learnt to use frequent tweets and prompt tweet-replies to keep in touch with fans.

"It has been a great way to connect with my fans," Yuvraj told MiD DAY recently. A devoted Tweeter, he says, "As kids, we wanted to know what our icons did off the field and found out only through media reports. But with these social networking sites, stars can now interact with fans directly... without the fear of being misquoted or misrepresented. It's definitely a safe and direct way to interact with fans."

The flamboyant left-hander gets suggestions, requests and some overwhelming tweets too, he says. One fan told him he'd watched his ICC World Cup T20 innings 500 times. "Wow, that's a lot of times," came the southpaw's quick response.

Yuvraj manages to respond to his fans' tweets three to four times a week. "Time is a big factor, but I have my Blackberry," says Yuvraj, who follows the activities of a smattering of Bollywood tweeters including Preity Zinta, Karan Johar, Gul Panag, Neil Nitin Mukesh and A R Rahman, as well as international sportspersons like Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Rafael Nadal and Sania Mirza.

The response from his fans has been fabulous. "They keep coming back to me," he says. "When I started, I had about 100 fans. The register has increased to thousands now."

Yuvraj also plays big brother to fans, occasionally. One fan tweeted about bunking classes to watch his superstar play.

The star bat's response was mildly admonishing. "Even we bunked school and college to watch games. Obviously it is not right," Yuvraj says. "I tell my fans on Twitter to do the right thing." Advertisement

Indian Muslims are also Hindus, says RSS chief

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat late Sunday created a flutter at a public meeting here by claiming that Indian Muslims were originally Hindus and follow Hindu rituals.
India is a country of Hindus. Even Muslims and Christians are also Hindus as they have inherited the Hindu culture. They too have roots in Hinduism," Bhagwat said while addressing about 15,000 RSS activists at a gathering in the sprawling Bangalore Palace grounds.

After meeting ex-RSS chief, Shia cleric approves 'Vande Mataram'

Substantiating his claim, Bhagwat said Muslims sing qawwalis because they inherited the trait of singing bhajans (hymns) from their forefathers. They also worship at mausoleums of great Muslim saints by offering chadar (quilt), which is equivalent to idol worshipping by Hindus.

"We are a country of unity in diversity. We are all one despite so many languages, different religions, cultures, traditions and food habits. All Indians derive strength from the spirit of Hindutva, which is a way of life - sanatana dharma," Bhagwat said in his hour-long speech in chaste Hindi. Advertisement

Shiv Sena Attacks Sachin again in 'Saamna

Continuing its attack on Sachin Tendulkar, Shiv Sena on Sunday said there was no instance of him helping any Marathi cricketer while Sunil Gavaskar was a "genuine Maharashtrian" and had given Test caps to many players from the state during his tenure as India captain.

In an article in party mouthpiece 'Saamna', Sena MP Sanjay Raut while comparing Tendulkar to Gavaskar, alleged, "There has been no instance of Sachin extending a helping hand to other Marathi cricketers. Forget others, he did not even support Vinod Kambli.

"In contrast, Gavaskar when he captained India, had half the team drawn from Mumbai and Maharashtra. He gave Test caps to many Marathi players including Suru Naik and Zulphikar Parkar at least for one match," he said, while also acknowledging Tendulkar's greatness as a cricketer.

"In this context, Gavaskar is a genuine 'Maharashtrian' and the whole country loves him even now in the same way," the article claimed.

"Players like Sachin have become rich because of game of cricket. Sachin's wealth has crossed Rs 200-crore mark. We expect Sachin to be as 'proud' of Maharashtra as Saurav Ganguly is of Bengal," it said.

"Rahul Dravid too is a Marathi player but he is loyal to Karnataka," Raut said.

The latest salvo came after Sena supremo Bal Thackeray on November 16 accused the cricket icon of hurting Marathi sentiments with his "Mumbai for all" remark.

Thackeray's remarks had evoked angry reactions from a host of political leaders as also the BCCI, who came down heavily on the Shiv Sena chief for criticising Tendulkar, saying his statement was just right and nobody could take objection to it.

Thackeray said that Tendulkar had, through his remark, "left the crease and moved to the pitch of politics" and this had hurt the Marathi psyche.

Earlier, 36-year-old Tendulkar had said, "I am a Maharashtrian and I am extremely proud of that. But I am an Indian first. And Mumbai belongs to all Indians." Advertisement
