Sanjay Dutt Knocks Out Kangana Ranaut

50-year old Sanjay Dutt has been shooting with 20-something Kangana Ranaut. And if they were looking super-compatible in spite of Kangana being half the age of Dutt, it’s all because of Dutt’s special ketosis-based diet.Says a source close to Dutt, “Sanjay went on this special diet in June. It required him to take lots and lots of fattie food and no carbohydrates at all. In fact carbs would’ve been potentially lethal for this diet. In no time Sanjay started losing weight. And that too without Sanju having to give up his favourite food.”

Today, Dutt is looking trimmer than he did ten years ago. And when he shot with Kangana last week, the camera made them look compatible.Dutt plays an assassin out to get his victim with a sniper rifle in Knock Out. Kangana Ranaut has always had a fascination for assassin heroes. She began her career with Gangster where her assassin-hero was Shiney Ahuja. Now in Mani Shankar’s Knock Out, she’s again attracted to the killer-hero, this time played by Sanjay Dutt.

The two became professionally fond of one another while shooting for the comedy No Problem in Cape Town. When Mani Shankar was looking for a bright intense young actress to play a television journalist it was Dutt who recommended Kangana to the director.

Salman-Asin resorting to cheap publicity?

Somebody might have opened the Pandora’s box as the release date of London Dreams drew near. All sorts of gossips varying from Salman Khan’s close relationship with his co-star Asin Thottumkal to their big fight filled the newspaper entertainment columns and websites.Do you think the lead pair is resorting to cheap publicity? Who knows, because they neither complained nor cared to clarify the gossips.

Yes, they say ‘no publicity is bad publicity.’ Asin, being relatively a novice in Bollywood though a big name down South, seemed to be disturbed by all the gossips. But Salman handles it differently. He keeps mum on all the issues – be it his relationship with Asin or the alleged ‘fight’. He knows it would create more hype around the film and thus pave the way for a good opening.

Well, the much-hyped film London Dreams, starring Ajay Devgn besides Salman and Asin, releases today. Let’s wait and watch whether it’s worth the hype!

Abhishek-Kareena come together

Over the years, Abhishek Bachchan and Kareena Kapoor have been quite vociferous about not wanting to work together after his marriage to Karisma Kapoor was called off. Now things seem to be looking up as Kareena and Abhishek are in the mood to move on and have agreed to star together in a film after six years. Buzz is that the two have been signed for Abbas Mustan’s untitled film, a remake of the Hollywood film, Italian Job. The movie will also star Katrina Kaif and Neil Nitin Mukesh in lead roles.A source says, “Initially talks were on with Saif Ali Khan but he did not have dates and Abhishek Bachchan replaced him.

Although Saif and Kareena’s chemistry would have sizzled onscreen, it will be nice to watch Abhishek and Kareena after Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon, which was their last film together in 2003. Both actors made their acting debut together in Refugee and have been in the industry for years but have only starred together in two films till date.”While Kareena’s manager Zahid denies that she has signed the film, a source close to Abbas Mustan says, “The directors always had Kareena in mind and now they have managed to get Katrina on board too.The film will go on the floors in April and like every Abbas Mustan film, this too will also be shot on a lavish budget at international locations.

The directors are clear about who they want to cast in the film.”The Italian Job (2003) rights are with Studio 18. CEO Sandeep Bhargava of Studio 18 says, “We have the rights of Italian Job. Abbas Mustan are working on the script and will also direct the film. The movie will go on the floors sometime next year.”When asked about the star cast, Bhargava says, “We can’t approach any actors till the script is ready.”Despite several attempts, Abbas Mustan remained unavailable for comment.

Amitabh Bachchan gets threat calls

Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan has received threat calls from an unknown person on his mobile, the actor revealed it on his blog. Big B, who played a genie in his latest rlease Aladin, wrote: “I visit a Muslim dargah and a Hindu temple has been viciously criticised by an unknown element on my mobile. He says it is incorrect of me to do so and that I should never do it again.” Amitabh Bachchan has been paying a visit to the Haji Ali dargah in Mumbai for the past few years. The actor in his reply said: “Well dear man, if you are reading this insignificant little blog of mine, here is what I have to say to you. I am going to do it again and shall continue to do it. And I want to see how you are going to stop me.

If you have the courage and guts com and get me.”Big B, who recently celebrated his 67th birthday earlier this month, said: “I do have his mobile number and I do have a name too. I believe that there is no law that can protect such atrocious uttering. We live in a temperate secular society where we learn to respect all religions. My belief is of my own making. If the temple or the mosque or a dargah has no objection to my visits ; if my Constitution and the laws of the country give me that freedom and if I do not offend them, then who is this man to stop me or correct me ? It is elements like this that penetrate the psyche of vulnerable and innocent people and subject them to unnecessary and unjustified bias. I strongly object to it and abhor the existence of such elements in society.

This gentleman even threatens me by getting personal. He says that my film Aladin shall not have success because of this deed of mine.”The legendary actor said he will never change his routine by a mere threaten call: “At the cost of every film of mine failing, I am not going to change my routine. If I wish to go to a temple I shall go there. If I wish to go to a mosque I shall go there as well and so also to a gurudwara or a church. And I want to see who is going to stop me from doing so.” Thr actor’s film Aladin has been praised by his followers.

Katrina Kaif caught again!

Just before the release of her film New York, Bollywood’s numero-uno actress, Katrina Kaif had visted the holy ‘dargah’ (shrine) of the revered sufi saint, Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti (Katrina visits Ajmer to bring luck to New York!- June 24). While on that occasion she had worn a blue scarf to hide herself from the media glares as well as her fans, this time it was a yellow one!

As per sources, Katrina was in Ajmer yesterday (Friday) to pray for the success of her friend Salman Khan’s London Dreams and also her upcoming, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani. Before proceeding to the shrine, Katrina briefly halted at RTDC’s Khadim Tourist Bungalow in Ajmer and changed her dress. She then left for the ‘dargah’ but despite all the secrecy, she was unable to hide herself from the media and her fans (just like last time!) who got a whiff of her arrival and thronged the shrine, thus blocking the roads to the ‘dargah’.

She hurriedly paid her respects and left. Here’s joining Katrina in her prayer and wishing London Dreams and Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani the best!

London Dreams London embarrassment

The London Dreams show (to promote Vipul Shah’s film) at the Excel Arena in London got cancelled because of a no-show by artistes and technicians. Says a source, “Intech Image had tied up for the film promotion of London Dreams and had planned a few activities for the promotion of the film. An event had been planned at Excel Arena in London, where Salman Khan, Asin and Ajay Devgn were to participate on October 28 along with director Vipul Shah and music directors Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy.Ajay backed out of the event due to prior commitments and Asin didn’t have a valid visa.

It didn’t make sense for just Salman to perform, if the other artistes were not available, so the organisers cancelled the show.”But no one bothered to inform poor Salman about the last-minute cancellation, adds an insider “Salmanbhai came in straight from Dubai where he had gone for a special show of London Dreams. When he landed in London on Wednesday, he learnt that the show had been cancelled! Fortunately, he was anyway supposed to be there for some media interaction so his trip wasn’t entirely wasted.”Vipul Shah says, “We were supposed to do one event in London but we never went ahead with the proposal. Salman has gone only for the media promotion of London Dreams to London. He is there for two days.

S Sabapaty from Intech says, “It’s kind of Mr Vipul Shah to say this but we had organised a show for LD at the Excel Arena but couldn’t gather anyone except Salman to appear on the show so we decided to cancel it. In the original agreement, we had advertised in the publicity posters that the cast and crew of LD would attend and the event would be held in the form of a concert. But the cast and crew who were to perform couldn’t make it because of the problems they had. We can’t cheat the audience so we decided to cancel the show.”

Apparently, Salman was informed at the last minute? “No, he was informed about it earlier and he was on his way to London in any case for media stuff. We got a great response for the show but had to cancel it due to technical issues. As a company, we have to maintain our reputation so we took the call to cancel the show on October 28.” Salman Khan remained unavailable for comment.

Obama talks of 'romance deficit' in White House

Being the first couple in the United States is extraordinary hard on romance if you believe President Barack Obama, who has expressed his irritation about the hoo-ha when he took his wife to New York on a date.

The US President said the criticism he received for whisking his wife up to Manhattan for dinner and a Broadway play was the single most annoying experience since arriving at the White House.

"People made it into a political issue," Obama told The New York Times magazine for an article about the Obamas' marriage, appearing in the Nov 1 issue.

"If I weren't president, I would be happy to catch the shuttle with my wife to take her to a Broadway show, as I had promised her during the campaign, and there would be no fuss and no muss and no photographers," he said, adding "That would please me greatly".

Trying to be a good husband, he kept a campaign promise to take Michelle to New York after the election for one of their "date nights" – dinner and a Broadway play.

Conservative critics cried foul over the security and transportation costs for the May trip, which was footed by taxpayers.

"The notion that I just couldn't take my wife out on a date without it being a political issue was not something I was happy with," Obama was quoted as saying by the NY Daily News.

The first African American President said what he values most about his marriage is that it is "separate and apart from a lot of the silliness of Washington."

"And Michelle is not part of that silliness," he said. The article explores the effects of the presidency on the couple's 17-year union and revisits well-documented tension between them in earlier years when Obama pursued his political career in Illinois, leaving his wife largely home alone in Chicago with their daughters.

It also looks into her roles in the presidential campaign and in the White House, the report said.

Michelle said there was no "flawless relationship" and it is "the last thing we want to project".

"The strengths and challenges of our marriage don't change because we move to a different address," she said, adding "the bumps" happen to everybody all the time, "and they are continuous". Advertisement

Ranbir plays an abnormal character in Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani,

The lead pair of Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor, insist that director Raj Kumar Santoshi has derived never-seen-before performances from them.

The trio were present at a media meet in Wave Cinema (Noida) and surely made an ajab as well as ghazab team. Ajab in the sense that Santoshi was not aware that Ranbir and Katrina have worked in comedies before. Says Santoshi, "They are working in a comedy for the first time." Kat of course came to his rescue and corrected him, "He means we haven't done a comedy like Ajab Prem.. before. He's made the film so different that it is very unlike my characters in Welcome and Singh is Kinng".

Ranbir too was all praise for Santoshi. "Whatever I have done during the shooting of the film is going to help me for the rest of my career," he gushed.

Point taken! And what's the ghazab factor? Well, quiz Ranbir and Kat about the USP of the film, and both of them say in unison, "Rajji's direction". Too much of sugar, we must say.

But the lead actors swear by the fact that it's an innovative comedy. Innovative in the sense that Ranbir is playing an abnormal character? In the words of Santoshi, "The character of Ranbir is called Prem and he's not a normal guy. I would say he's an abnormal person. If I say more the story would be revealed."

Raj Kumar Santoshi is apparently very happy with his lead cast and would like to cast them for the remake of Andaaz Apna Apna. "There will be two guys and a girl. Ranbir can play the role of one guy and Katrina can play the lead role. And if I don't get the other guy, I'll play the role myself," says the director jokingly. 'Ajab' sense of humour, we must say!

So what to expect from the movie? "It's a romantic comedy. And love is an ajab emotion. Ab main Katrina ko phone deta hoon," says Santoshi. Katrina smiles and discovers that it's actually the mike he's referring to. Another ajab quote!

Salman Khan stripped down to underwear

Bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan was in the news not long ago after being detained for hours together at Newark Airport, in the US. Salman Khan, who is dubbed as Shahrukh’s enemy, is going to do a similar plot in his about-to-be-released London Dreams.

However, there is comic touch to Salman’s detention scene. The officials strip-search him. In the end, he was left with only his underwear and a red tie around his neck. He said that he didn’t let the officials take off his underwear and the neck tie didn’t come off.

London Dreams starring Salman along with Ajay Devgn and Asin Thottumkal, is set for release tomorrow, October 30.

Ranbir denies split with Deepika

A lot has been said about his relationship with Deepika Padukone hitting the rocks but Ranbir Kapoor has cleared the air and rubbished rumours that he had split up with his ladylove. Ranbir who was promoting for Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani said that he was very much together with Deepika and the media should stop spreading such rumours.

On his link up with Katrina Kaif, Ranbir said that when two stars work together the media tries to link them up and create stories around them. He added that he found this very awkward as both he and Katrina were professionals and were trying to do their best for the movie.

Seems like Deepika and Ranbir are back on tracks with their relationship.

Aamir tried to restore peace between SRK and Salman

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan has disclosed that he had tried to broker a peace deal between Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan after their infamous spat last year. In an interview with a magazine Aamir said that he had gone to Shahrukh’s residence for the first time in his life to make him patch up with Salman. Aamir added that very early in his talks with the two he had realised that he wouldn’t succeed.

A dejected Aamir later became closer to Salman and the two of them are now taking on Shahrukh and his camp. Aamir recently walked the ramp for the first time for Salman’s charity Being Human. He concluded the interview saying that although he had tried his best and failed he hoped that the two superstars would patch up. He added that this is not just effecting their Bollywood careers but their personal lives too.

It may be recalled that during Katrina Kaif’s birthday bash last year Shahrukh Khan and Salman had a spat. The fallout of this was that the entire Bollywood became divided into two camps. Since then the two stars have regularly avoided each other at public events and tinsel town parties. They also haven’t missed any opportunity of taking digs at each other. It remains to be seen if any other celebrity can succeed where Aamir failed.

Salman Khan snubs Asin in public

Another B’wood fallout! I just love these tinsel townies. Their emotions fluctuate so much, there’s always scope for a turnaround in any relationship. The latest to join the list is the Salman Khan-Asin friendship.A little birdie told me that the actors who shared a loving relationship during the making of their film London Dreams, have fallen out just before the film is all set to hit the theatres. And for no apparent reason. So let me tell you what exactly happened. In a recent press conference, Salman ignored (and I mean IGNORED) his co-star Asin completely. He pretended not to see her and simply refused to acknowledge the Ghajini girl’s presence when she was sitting right beside him.

Now, that’s taking shortsightedness to a new level, wotsay?Ok, so this is how it went. There was a press conference. Interviews were scheduled in two adjacent studios. Asin started with her interviews at 1 pm. Salman Khan was unwell after his Kolkata trip and wanted his interviews rescheduled but however, continued chatting with the media. Asin, obviously wanting to meet her superstar co-actor came from studio 5 (where her interview was being held) to studio 6 (where Khan was speaking to the media) completely aware that there was not going to be any joint interviews. Salman did not even greet her! OUCH!

But persistence thy name is Asin! The girl stuck around, sitting right next to Khan and getting ignored. Finally Sallu got up and left. Asin had to follow. Now, one cannot help but wonder what had gone wrong between the co-stars who had got along famously so far. So Juicy Mausi just had to do some snoopin’ around. According to this little birdie, Salman andAsin were so close, it was apparently creating problems in his relationship with Katrina Kaif. And that’s exactly why Khan decided to distance himself from the lady. Hmmm… Is he just trying to be the example and tell Katrina to do the same with Ranbir? Who knows?

However, Asin refuses to give in to such rumours and apparently has claimed that the duo had come and left the interview together. They are even going to attend the premiere ofthe film in the same limo! Good for them!

Claudia gets too close with Bhaktiyar

Bigg Boss 3 is trying to catch in with more eyeballs by showing the closeness of Bhaktiyar Irani and Claudia Ciesla. Where as Tanaaz’s reaction towards their proximity is neglected in the scenes. “Bhaktiyar is trying to get more close to Claudia after the ouster of Kamal R Khan. The channel too was focusing on that just to get the more eyeballs on weekends,” chirps the little birdie.

Elaborating on the stint, our source adds, “Bhaktiyar’s wife Tanaaz being in the house is not making any difference for the actor. Over the top, whether she is objecting or not is not been shown.”We all have seen how the actor was trying to impress the German model and trying to get close in the kitchen and near the pool.

Is this for real or just another game for the ratings? Now we need to wait and watch of how far these people can go on the name of reality…

Protest against Aladin posters

Following the protest against Aladin posters being put up on the graffiti wall on Senapati Bapat Marg, director of the film Sujoy Ghosh ended up apologising for the inconvenience caused. The makers of Aladin immediately removed the posters from the wall after the citizens complaint. Sujoy Ghosh admitted that it was a big mistake but claimed that they didn’t know who put up the posters.

He added that it wouldn’t have happened had he had his own way and apologised for the inconvenience caused. To make up the damage caused, the unit of the film including Sujoy Gosh, music directors Vishal Dadlani and Shekhar Ravjiani and the lead pair Riteish Deshmukh and Jacqueline Fernandez will repaint the wall today.

Who knows they did it intentionally to publicise the film. After all, no publicity is bad publicity. The film is releasing tomorrow, October 30.

Asin Thottumkal is game for a bikini

It is difficult to survive in Bollywood without glamour. Even established actresses have been forced to go glamorous due to cut-throat competition. Rani Mukherjee exposed like never before in her recent release Dil Bole Hadippa while Kareena Kapoor and Lara Dutta stunned the audience by appearing in bikini in their recent releases.

So, is our Ghajini actress Asin Thottumkal game for two-piece attire? The answer is ‘Yes’.Asin recently said that she is not averse to wearing a bikini. She thinks it is very subjective and depends largely on how comfortable she feels with the team. She doesn’t rule out donning it in the future if the script really demands it.

Well, Asin’s second Bollywood film London Dreams is releasing tomorrow, October 30. She acts with Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn.

Amitabh Bachchan finds the child within

We bet you’ve never heard anything like this before. Literally. On Tuesday, Amitabh Bachchan recorded the title song for Balki’s Paa in the voice of a 12-year-old and that too without the help of technology.Music director Aadesh Shrivastava says, “I thought I would initially record the song in Amitji’s normal voice and later use technological enhancement and modify it to make it sound like a child’s.

However, Amitji was firm that I wouldn’t have to do anything of that sort and that he will sing in a child’s voice without any help. He went on to do just that.”Aadesh, who handled the daunting task of recording music maestro Ilaiyaraaja’s tune in Amitabh’s voice, adds, “It is originally a tune created by Raja sir (Ilaiyaraaja).Normally, I’d never even dream of touching his tunes but I have worked as a drummer for him on Sadma (1983) and he sent this song from Chennai for Amitji to sing it in Mumbai.”

Aadesh predicts that the song will be an instant hit with children. “Amitabh does not sound like a grown-up man imitating a child. Don’t ask me how he has managed to do it. I just sat there stunned.”

Salman Rushdie plans a Graphic novel

Controversial India-born author Salman Rushdie is considering widening his fan base by creating his first graphic novel.

The Midnight's Children author has established himself as a top name in the genres of magic realism and historical fiction and is now contemplating channeling his childhood love of comic books into a new venture, Contactmusic reported.

"Recently I got asked if I'd like to write a graphic novel. When I was a kid I was a real comic book nut and I can tell you a lot about superheroes," Rushdie said.

Meanwhile, Rushdie seems to have moved on after his split from ex-girlfriend actress Pia Glenn who called him "cowardly, dysfunctional and immature".

The 62-year-old author who retaliated to Glenn's comment stating that she is an "accomplished liar" was seen attending the Norman Mailer Writers' Colony Gala with author Min Lieskovsky on his arm. Advertisement

Childhood Castle of Bruni for sale at $28 Million

If you've always wanted to live like an Italian heiress, supermodel, pop star and wife of a European head of state, there's a castle on the market in Turin that might be worth a look.

The historic home in the Italian hills where French first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy spent her early childhood is staking a "for sale" sign once again, just months after a Saudi billionaire bought the palatial property for $25 million.

Castello di (the castle at) Castagneto Po is in the hills northeast of Turin where Bruni-Sarkozy lived before the family relocated to Paris in the early 1970s as Marxist guerrilla groups struck fear among Italy's elite. It was sold by the family earlier this year.

Saudi Arabia's billionaire businessman Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, who is listed by Forbes as one of the world's wealthiest men, is now flipping the 21,000-square foot castle, never having moved in, for about 19 million Euros ($28 million).

Christie's Great Estates, a subsidiary of the art auction house, is slated to announce the listing in coming days.

Bruni's father, Italian industrialist Alberto Bruni Tedeschi, bought the 40-room castle, which dates back nearly 1,000 years, in 1952 and had it extensively restored and lavishly appointed.

Tedeschi died in 1996. Bruni-Sarkozy -- a former model and now singer who married French President Nicolas Sarkozy last year -- her mother and her sister first sold the castle's contents at auction and then the house itself.

"We had finished with Castagneto Po. Nobody went there any more," said Bruni's mother Marisa Bruni Tedeschi at the time.

Surrounded by some 175 acres replete with vegetable gardens, orchards, flowering terraces, ancient greenhouses, a caretaker's house and a farm building, the castle was rebuilt in neo-Gothic style ending in 1835, having been destroyed in 1705 following two centuries of French army invasions.

"The grandeur of Castle Castagneto Po is unrivaled in Northern Italy," said Giancarlo Bracco, founder of Christie's Great Estates' Italian affiliate ImmobilSarda s.r.l., which is handling the sale.

Its imposing facade conjures images of fairy tale princesses -- or real-life Italian supermodel-pop star-first ladies. Advertisement

Exiled Hussain could return by Dec if Govt has its way

Renowned Indian painter MF Hussain could finally return to his home land if the UPA government has its way.

Sources in Home Ministery suggest that the govt is working out a plan to bring the painter- in self exile in Dubai since 2006- back to India by weeding out the legal hurdles by the year end. The Centre is contemplating to approach the Supreme Court for expeditious disposal of all cases arising out of his controversial paintings.

Hussain had left India after extreme Hindu groups protested against and vandalized his paintings, calling them provocative and demeaning their faith. They were against Hussain painting nudes of Gods & Goddesses.

Now, after the painter himself appealed on his 94th birthday that he would like to return to India, Govt is set to either drop cases against him or refuse permission to prosecute Hussain.

Home Ministry sources said the cases filled across the country against Husain should be brought to a logical conclusion and this will enable the government to work out a focused strategy to bring him back.

Even his lawyer Akhil Sibal told a TV channel there was nothing that should keep Hussain away from his home. “If there is nothing against him, then all this should be brought to an end,” he said.

Of the seven cases against him, only three still remain. The Delhi HC in May last year quashed some of the criminal proceedings against the nonogenarian painter, saying his paintings were an expression of creativity. Advertisement

A British Dachshund terrier, which was put on wholesome diet, has been crowned as the world's oldest canine by Guinness World Records.

Twenty-year-and-eight-month-old Otto Jones, which has been recognised as the oldest living dog, is a bachelor and enjoys playing ball with neighbours' children despite his old age.

Owners of Otto, a Dachshund terrier cross, describe him as a "lovable and affectionate rogue".

Lynn and Peter Jones from Shropshire of West Midland region have had him since he was a puppy.

He is a bit deaf, but apart from a few grey whiskers and a touch of arthritis they said he was fit and healthy.

"The only thing I can put it down to is plenty of good wholesome food. He loves his Sunday dinners and his vegetables," Lynn said, adding the children in her street regularly call for Otto to play.

"Nothing seems to faze him," she added. Otto has also been invited to open a dog show, a BBC report said. Advertisement

Abhay Deol's action movie with a twist!

As an actor he loves to experiment and as he turns producer with Basra, Abhay Deol promises to be high on content. He says the action thriller will not only keep audiences on the edge of their seats but also make them think.

"There are three genres -- romance, comedy and action. They are mainstream inherently; so what I'm doing is taking a commercial genre and within it experimenting a little bit," Abhay told IANS in an interview.

The film is going on the floors early next year. Abhay has roped in Navdeep Singh of Manorama Six Feet Under to helm the project that will feature him along with Shahana Goswami and another girl whose name has been kept secret.

"Basra is high on content, but a good dose of action sequences will make it edgy and pretty dark as well. In other words, it is a mainstream movie but also has something that will make people think and keep them on the edge of their seats," he said.

"The thing about action films is that they are high on drama in terms of action sequences, have songs and other things, but content is secondary. For me, the idea was to get something that has content so that the action has some meaning. That's when Basra came in," he added.

The 32-year-old was launched by his uncle Dharmendra with Socha Na Tha in 2005. He then went on to prove his mettle with films like Ahista Ahista, Manorama Six Feet Under, Ek Chalis Ki Last Local, Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd and more recently Dev D.

When asked what motivated him to don the producer's hat, Abhay revealed: "I had bad experiences in the past, with Manorama... being the classic example where the director did his job - he made it well, actors gave their level best but when it was the producer's turn to distribute and market the film, it was nowhere to be seen.

"Not just Manorama..., I had been through this for some of my other films too. I realised that I need to protect my films because the director will move on, the producer will move on too but as an actor I will be considered a flop if things will not work.

"I also realised I need to protect myself," he explained.

Along with that he also wanted to give a platform to new and dynamic directors to make films that have quality content.

"The idea was also to provide platform to filmmakers to make the kind of movies they want to make -- probably high on content, low on budget. Let's see where the formula goes and then I will take it from there," said the actor, who was in the capital to attend the 11th Osian's Cinefan film festival where two of his films, Dev D and Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! were screened.

So does he plan to sign his cousins Sunny and Bobby Deol for his home productions?

"I would love to sign them for my films but it also depends on whether the role is right for them. So I don't think I will be able to approach them for my first venture, but something in the future definitely," said Abhay.

Right now the actor is excited about his upcoming film Road with Dev Benegal and his romantic film Aisha with Sonam Kapoor. Advertisement

Big B versus media?

For the past 555 posts, India’s most famous man, Amitabh Bachchan, has been blogging daily on the Internet. One pet peeve that’s repeatedly come out of his writing is the Indian press. He’s taken on pretty much every film or non-film journo along the way. His upcoming film, after this week’s release Aladin, is Rann, a take on TV news. Here, we play friendly mediator to hear him out on media in the media.

My interview is scheduled for 6.30 pm. I’m on my way up to the fifth-floor suite when the publicist buzzes. She sighs with relief, “With Mr Bachchan you can’t be late.”

Amitabh Bachchan has just wrapped up a group interview. The first of the one-on-one’s takes barely five minutes. It’s my turn. He greets me with a “We’ve met before.” Yes, at the Bigg Boss 3 PC. He settles down and turns to face me.

It’s “Lights, camera, action...” For the two guys who are video taping the interview for him. I wonder if I’ll find a mention on his blog. Not negatively, I hope. That draws an amused chuckle. Excerpts:

Growing up, what did you imagine a genie to be like?
A huge gentleman with a big paunch, Arabian pants and a long ponytail.

Then, he’s nothing like the genie you play in Aladin.
No, given that Sujoy (director Sujoy Ghosh) has contemporarised the old fairy tale, set it in almost modern times, he’s not all that different from a regular guy.

We’ve taken a few liberties with the hair, the hat and the dress. But for the most part, I played Mr Genie with a chuckle between my lips and a glint in my eyes.

Did you ever wish for a genie friend?
Don’t all of us at some point in our lives wish for magical powers? When I was in school, like my Bengali friend, Aladin Chatterjee, I too was punched around by boys bigger than me and made to carry out menial tasks by these bullies.

BachchanThat’s when I wished I were Batman, Superman or even Peter Pan. There was a time when my parents took on the role of genies because they seemed to have an answer to all my problems.

And now, when they are gone, who would you describe as your genie friend?
Today, at 68, I hope I may never feel the need for a genie friend.

Yeah, now you have your blog on which you can live up to the name you were first christened with, Inquilab.
The blog isn’t about sparking off an inquilab. It started out as a medium to pen down thoughts, talk to myself with a some listening in.

Today, to my delight, it’s helped me connect with the fan on the streets without having to go through the media. For 40 years, I didn’t know what this man thought of me.

Now, I do and while it may not always be complimentary, it gives me a chance to read his mind and try to improve myself in his eyes. The blog has helped me reach out to my extended family whom I can question at any hour, respond to and even take my dilemmas to.

You’ve been pulled up on the blog too by these fans a couple of times.
Yeah, because not all those reacting to the entries are starry-eyed fans. Many are extremely perceptive individuals, some more intelligent than me, who come with opinions on everything, from movies to morals.

There are times when I blurt out things without thought. A few days ago, I expressed my opinion on surrogate mothers, wondering how a woman could bear to be parted from her child.

Instantly, a couple of ladies wrote back pointing to the mental turmoil a woman who can’t conceive a child goes through, and the relief and joy she experiences when another woman helps her fulfill that dream. I had to take back my words.

Would you say that the blog has succeeded in humanising Bollywood’s Shahenshah who for so many years remained an out-of-reach movie icon?
If I seemed inaccessible, you have to blame it on the progress the media has made in the last two decades.

With over 400 TV channels, scores of newspapers, magazines and the internet, the all-pervasive media has taken over our lives.

Every time I step out of my home, my first thought is, “What if they see me?” Then, I find myself thinking, “When was the last time I wore this suit?” If it was too soon, I fear they would put together a bunch of photographs to show how I own just one suit.

You own the air only within the parameters of your home and sometimes even that space is invaded. I hold a prayer meeting on the roof of my house for privacy, and the media is looking in there too.

But is our media as bad as the western paparazzi?
It’s no less aggressive. I can’t stop people from writing. At the same time, they can’t stop me from expressing my views.

Yeah, of late, your blog has become a medium to hit out against the media.
If you truly analyse the blog, you will realise that references to the media are just five per cent. The remaining 95 per cent relate to my experiences viz a viz movies, family, events etc.

In a career spanning 40 years, you’ve had a love-hate relationship with the press. A 15 years ban, followed by a thawing period and now bursts of angry condemnation...
The media is never entirely pro or against any public figure. There are phases when good things are written about you and vice versa. It’s a cycle that has little to do with the person you are. I can understand that as a public figure I may not have the right to privacy. But, simultaneously, I cannot give one community the power to air its opinions about me, pass judgeDoes it help?
You know what’s most galling is that a half page article on me with a bold headline merits front page or pages 2 and 3. But if I come up with a rejoinder or insist on a retraction or clarification, it is tucked away in the inside pages where no one notices it. The result is that the first one off the blocks is believed and it is the damaging article that remains in the mind of the readers. That’s where the blog comes in handy, to correct misrepresentation.

Your brush with politics was brief but the repercussions continue to this day with references to Bofors and Barabanki cropping up almost daily in the newspapers.
That’s what I meant when I said that people remember headlines, not the retractions in the inside pages. The writing is there on the wall and can’t be erased even in the absence of evidence.

We fought a long battle, moved the Supreme Court, to clear our name. But no one talks about that. Positive pieces on celebrities don’t make good reading. We have name, fame and wealth.

How can we be pure? We are the villains of society who need to be pulled down regularly.

So you think you are being targetted when your name crops up in an FIR filed against Amar Singh or a lady out of the blue jumps up to insist that the land you donated for a girl’s college in UP, belongs to the gram sabha?
I have yet to see that FIR but those who have insist that my name is not in it. But again, no one talks about this because well, it doesn’t make interesting reading.

Similarly, if you study the land deeds, you would know that the plot I returned to the gram sabha earlier was a separate one from the one I donated towards building a college. This one is mine, I can do what I please with it. But no one wants to correct what was printed once.

Would you say then that you were better off in Singapore where you spent a lot of time in the last few months, by your ailing friend, Amar Singh’s bedside, away from the prying eyes of the media?
How far away can you go? Even there, I got my share of criticism, questions and press cuttings.

So, are you happy to be back?
Sure, this is my world. And even though health continues to be a worry—I’m in pain even as I talk to you—I can handle it. After all, I’m a genie now.

Are you going to be taking on the media in Ramgopal Varma’s Rann as well?
Given my past history and Ramgopal’s run-ins with the media, it would be easy to believe that we’ve connived to make something sinister. But actually, Rann is a very pro-media film that touches on the dilemma of whether to let your conscience override your business interests or vice versa.

Do you think Varma was right in reworking the words of the National Anthem to take his Rann forward?
Do you think he was wrong? Yes, there are some who don’t want the National Anthem projected in such a manner. And when there are varying opinions, you go to the censor board and the court of the land in the hope that they’ll see the positives in your film. ment, without it having to face my opinions and judgement. That’s why today, whenever I feel the need to correct misinformation, I do it, in the language and style I was accused of. Advertisement

Sarah Palin received $1.25m to pen memoir

Sarah Palin, the ex-governor of Alaska, was paid 1.25 million dollars to pen her memoir, official documents show.

Palin revealed the amount in a statement of her finances as Alaska governor before she tendered her resignation on July 27.

The sum was mentioned as a "retainer" received from publishers HarperCollins for her upcoming tome "Going Rogue: An American Life", reports the Telegraph.

However, the document does not say anything about the three months that she has been out of office and shows only a partial picture of the contract.

Palin is likely to make much more money as the book has already topped the popularity charts at Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.com, much before its November 17 release.

It was earlier believed that Palin had been paid 11 million dollars for the book. Advertisement

Queen wore a dress made from forgotten Indian cloth

The British Queen wore a dress fit for royals at her state banquet for President Pratibha Patil on Tuesday night - after finding the Indian fabric lying unused in a cupboard for decades.

Elizabeth II's stunning pale gold lame dress made its debut at the banquet after being delivered to her in the morning by her dresser.

"It's an Indian material from an earlier visit, but the Queen couldn't remember when," a royal spokeswoman told IANS at Windsor Castle, the 900-year-old castle where Elizabeth II hosted the dinner attended by 150 guests, including Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

"She had it in the cupboard and had forgotten about it. We think it could be from her first visit to India," the spokeswoman added.

The 83-year-old Queen had the fabric turned into a glamorous dress by her personal dresser Angela Kelly, said to be a close aide to her.

It turned out to be the most glamorous outfit of the evening.

The British monarch has visited India thrice - in 1961, 1983 and 1997. Advertisement

Amitabh touches Sanjay Dutt’s feet

Believe it or not Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan touched Sanjay Dutt’s feet. The unthinkable happened in the Sujoy Ghosh directed Aladin when it a particular scene Big B who plays the Genie had to kneel down and touch the feet of Ringmaster played by Sanjay Dutt. Sujoy Ghosh considered the scene to be very important as it contributed to the dramatic quotient of the movie. The entire team was apprehensive about shooting the scene as they were asking the living legend of Indian cinema to touch someone’s feet.

Director Sujoy Ghosh was worried about the reaction of millions of Indians to it.Sanjay Dutt too wasn’t game for the scene at first since Amitabh Bachchan is too big a name to be kneeling down on his feet.Amitabh Bachchan didn’t hesitate in going by the demand of the script and encouraged everyone including Ghosh to shoot the important sequence.

The movie will be worth a watch because never in his career the ‘angry young man’ of the 70s or the ‘Godfather’ of the millennium has been shot kneeling down in somebody’s feet.

John Abraham miffed with Blue director

John Abraham is blue alright; the actor isn’t taking nicely to Anthony D’souza’s public claims to have approached him for his next two films. After the first week collections of Blue, the filmmakers went on to tag the disaster of a film as a boxoffice hit. However critics and audiences say otherwise. To distract the attention newbie director Anthony D’souza went on to announce his next two films, one being the sequel to Blue and one being Aerial, a film sources say loosely based on the Tom Cruise starrer Top Gun. However what miffed the rather cool and calm actor was when Anthony claimed that he had zeroed in on John for both the roles.

A source close to John reveals, “John didn’t take it well at all, while he has utmost respect for any director whatsoever, he was angry that Anthony told the media that John would be a part of his next two films. Which however is completely untrue and he was upset that Anthony would want to gain publicity by making such a claim. He later on spoke to Anthony about it and the director apologised in return. John only believes in the power of a script and not cheap publicity, considering Blue wasn’t well-received by the audience, he knows what to keep in mind before accepting a film.” John recently confirmed to the press saying, ‘I have immense respect for Anthony and the fact that he wants to work with me.

However, I am neither doing any film titled Aerial nor any underwater film. I am also not doing Blue 2.’When StarBoxOffice contacted Anthony D’souza about the same, he replied, “At the moment I am going through scripts and had only thought of making the sequel to Blue and Aerial. However that wasn’t set in stone and as far as John goes, I had hoped to star him in my forthcoming film but haven’t approached him or spoken to him as of yet. I will do that when I zero down on a good script or story.” If that’s the case we wonder why the hue and cry for eh!
