Harpoon modification by Pak taken ‘very seriously’: US

The US has taken "very seriously" the reports about illegal modifications made in the American-made Harpoon anti-ship missile by Pakistan, to expand capabilities to strike land targets, a potential threat to India, even as Islamabad has agreed for "mutual inspections".

"This is something that we take very seriously. We have raised the issue with the Pakistani government. The (Pak) government has responded with an agreement in principle for mutually agreed inspections," the Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs PJ Crowley, said when asked about a news report published in The New York Times.

In a news report published August 30, The New York Times, quoting unnamed American official, said the US has accused Pakistan of illegal modifications in the Harpoon anti-ship missile to expand its capacity to strike land targets, a potential threat to India. Between 1985 and 1988 the Ronald Reagan administration delivered 165 Harpoon missiles to Pakistan.

"In this particular case, we have some concerns. We shared them with the Government of Pakistan. The Government of Pakistan has been responsive," Crowley said.

"We would wait and see if those inspections can address the concerns that we have raised," he said. The US has also accused Pakistan of modifying American-made P-3C aircraft for land-attack missions. Both are violations of the US law, including the Arms Control Export Act.

"I am not going to talk about specific issues, brought up in the story. We watch this closely. These are important agreements. This is not about any one country. With any country with which we exchange our defence articles, we have this kind of agreement," Crowley said.

"When we have concerns about how those systems should be used, we raise these concerns with the appropriate governments," he noted.

The violations by Pakistan were first noted by the American intelligence agencies on April 23, The New York Times said, when Pakistan had an unannounced suspicious missile test, that appeared to give the country a new offensive weapon. Pakistan has denied those charges.

The modified version of the missile would be a significant new entry into Pakistan’s arsenal against India as these would enable its small Navy to strike targets on land in India, this complementing the sizable land-based missile arsenal that Pakistan has developed.

Since early this year, when the Obama administration had proposed to triple the non-military aid and also increase its military assistance to Pakistan, a number of US lawmakers have been making similar charges against Pakistan and demanding that any military aid to the country should be conditional.

The Congress is in the final stages of taking a decision on providing USD 7.5 billion in civilian aid to Pakistan. The latest expose has the potential to "derail" this, the daily said.Crowley said the Administration is keeping the Congress full informed on this issue. When asked if this would have any impact on the future of US aid to Pakistan, he said: "I would like to take one step at a time. We have raised some concerns. It has been done at the highest levels over lengthy period of time. As we gain more facts, we will understand its potential implications." Advertisement

Benazir wanted to attack Indian nuclear sites: Ex-Army Chief

Slain Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto had asked the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) to be ready for attacking India's nuclear facilities, when reports surfaced in 1990 that US, Israel and India were planning to strike Pakistan's nuclear establishments.

In an interview with a private television channel, former Chief of Army Staff Mirza Aslam Beg revealed that Bhutto had directed the PAF to prepare itself for attacking India.

Beg said Bhutto remained "rock solid" amid reports that US, Israel and India were planning to attack Pakistan’s nuclear sites.

"Benazir remained "rock solid" in 1990 amid reports of conspiracy against Pakistan," The Daily Times quoted Beg, as saying.

Beg also disclosed that the Saudis had given loads of money to Mahmood Haroon to ask politicians to join the Islami Jamhoori Ittehad (IJI), which was formed to destabilize Bhutto's government and ensure that she never returns to power.

Who is running Lashkar?

With Hafiz Saeed in the dock, Intelligence Bureau gives out two names to state police

With Islamabad under intense pressure from the international community to rein-in fundamentalist elements and bring Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) chief Hafiz Saeed to book, Indian spy agencies says that the terrorist organisation is being run by somebody else these days.

Representative photo
The Intelligence Bureau has passed on the profile of two people who are suspected to lead Lashkar in the absence of Saeed. They have been identified as Mohd Iftikhar and Muzammil.

The input was given to various state police departments that are yet to confirm the development.

The input was received about 20 days ago.

The IB report also mentions that there is a core group of six people running the LeT currently. "These six people are among the decision makers. We have inputs that they meet discreetly at a double-storey building in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir, an area that has been active since February-March this year," said a senior IB officer.

The state police tried to develop the input but they are yet to find any clinching evidence to prove the theory. They believe that rumours are being spread by the Lashkar terrorists to distract the investigations into terrorist crimes, including the probe into the 26/11 attacks on Mumbai.

"Hafiz is keeping a low profile these days but he is the one who runs the operations. The names that the agencies have come up with can be a ploy to distract law implementing agencies. We have heard very little of the two. At least one of them Muzammil is believed to have a hand in the Mumbai terrorist attacks," said a Mumbai Anti Terrorism Squad official.

Meanwhile, the Special Cell of the Delhi police is still interrogating Salim who was arrested last week from the New Delhi Railway station. Salim is believed to have been involved in a cas Advertisement

The World's Top-Earning Cricketers

With its deep-pocketed owners and global appeal, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has shaken up professional cricket, luring top players from five continents with paychecks as big as $111,000 per three-hour match. That's a stunning sum in a sport where domestic leagues have traditionally been an afterthought to the international version of the game.

While cricket is one of the most popular sports in the world (it's played competitively in more than 100 countries), before the IPL launched last year, no domestic league was truly run as a business. But with IPL teams now paying top players as much as $1.55 million for just a five week season, versus $500,000 to $1 million, depending on the country, for an almost year-long slate of national team games, cricket is in the midst of a dramatic shift.

Some of the sport's biggest names are already leaving their national teams to focus on the club game. Included is Sourav Ganguly, the former Indian team captain, who was paid $1.1 million to play for the Kolkata Knight Riders this year. English star Andrew Flintoff is following suit and will retire from Test matches, the traditional five-day version of the international game, next month. This after receiving less than half of his $1.55 million salary from the Chennai Super Kings this year due to a scheduling conflict between his two teams, which was initially going to sideline him for most of the IPL season (turns out an injury during early IPL play caused him to miss both competitions).

The IPL is home to the nine highest-paid cricket players in the world. Tenth ranked Michael Clarke, who left up to $1 million on the table to play club games in his native Australia, is the only member of our list who's not currently on one of the IPL's eight team rosters. Our paycheck figures include club and national team salaries and commercial endorsement income over the last 12 months. For the top stars, endorsements are the most lucrative source of revenue.

Take Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who plays for the Chennai Super Kings and tops our list as cricket's first $10 million-a-year man (that's $5,426 for each run scored). His $8 million in endorsements, from the likes of Reebok, General Electric ( GE - news - people ) and Pepsi ( PEP - news - people ), is 45% higher than any other player. Among all Indian athletes and entertainers, Dhoni's 17 corporate sponsors is second to only Bollywood star and co-owner of the Knight Riders, Shah Rukh Khan.

Cricket's second highest earner is Sachin Tendulkar. The holder of numerous offensive records, Tendulkar, known to fans as Little Master, is considered among the greatest batsman in cricket history. Now in the twilight of his career, he's one of five IPL players who have been bestowed "icon" status, meaning he automatically receives a paycheck 15% larger than his highest paid teammate. Tendulkar's $1.1 million salary from the Mumbai Indians helped push his total earnings to $8 million over the last 12 months.

While runaway player costs have led to strikes and lockouts that have plagued other sports leagues, IPL commissioner Lalit Modi encourages spending on players and punishes teams that don't pay them enough. Last year he fined the Rajasthan Royals $600,000 for spending $300,000 under the league's minimum threshold at an auction where teams selected players. He also raised the salary cap from $5 million per team in 2008 to $7 million this year.

The Kings XI Pubjab's highest-paid player is Yuvraj Singh, who earned just over $1 million from the team and another $4 million from endorsements, primarily from Reebok and Fiat ( FIATY.PK - news - people ), making him the third richest cricketer over the last 12 months. Singh, who's 27 years old, was once awarded a Porsche 911 and $250,000 as a prize for his batting achievements in a tournament.

Expect him to join Dhoni in the driver's seat as cricket's highest-earners for years to come. Advertisement
